Another Day in Awesometown!

Friday, February 25th, 2011

A little over a year ago, Gunn/Jerkens was given the task of reinvigorating a community, already established, in a creative and distinctive way. This was right up the Gunn/Jerkens alley! One of the many different approaches to the job included interviewing community residents. The recurring word of choice by residents to describe their community was “awesome!” And thus, Awesometown was born.

Throughout 2010, Gunn/Jerkens worked tirelessly to build a marketing campaign that spoke to current and potential residents, inspiring pride to rediscover its base – the people. Using creative ads, media sharing contests and live events, Gunn/Jerkens was able to deliver in a major way. The impact of the campaign was most evidently confirmed at the October 2010 Gourmet Food Truck Festival in Valencia. Initially expecting 3,000 hungry visitors, the event drew in over 10,000 by the close. Further, the campaign drew so much attention within the industry that its success was noted and honored, receiving a coveted SoCal Award and two awards at Nationals, one for Best Integrated Internet Marketing Campaign and a second for Best Special Promotion for its Gourmet Food Truck Festival.

National Award

Fast forward to the present and we see that Awesometown has proved to be exactly what it started out to be: “Built as promised.” Residents today are actively engaging in their community both at home and online. Today, Valencia’s Facebook following is well over 5,000 and growing every day. This year, Gunn/Jerkens plans to continue with edgy and engaging marketing, helping Valencia residents share the awesomeness that is Awesometown.

We’re grateful for the recognition and honored to work with such amazing clients and residents of Awesometown. To discover Awesometown for yourself, visit Valencia.com, “Like” Valencia on Facebook and follow the community on Twitter.

Sitting Around…in Traffic!

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Stop-go, orange cones, honking horns, late. If you’re lucky, this doesn’t mean anything to you. But unfortunately for most of us in the Los Angeles area, these dreadful words are what we encounter daily on our commute; they are the sure signs of traffic.

For those of us at Gunn/Jerkens, today seemed to be an especially traffic-ridden day. Almost everyone in the office had a story or two to tell about their morning traffic encounters, from a jam-packed 405 freeway and lane-closing construction to troublesome accidents. We ended up hearing so many different commuting problems that coincidence started to look more and more like fate. Was it a conspiracy or was it merely chance? We may never know, but let’s hope tomorrow is a different story!

How was your commute today?

Brilliant, My Dear Watson

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Over the last few days, Watson has become a household name and global sensation–and no, we’re not talking about the sidekick of  Sherlock Holmes.

As most of you already know, this past week Watson, the IBM supercomputer, has been dominating the world of Jeopardy. To test his thinking and performance capacity, he was put up against some of the most successful contestants in the history of the show. And not only did Watson hand out questions in a manner that would put most reporters to shame; he also completely crushed the competition.

For anyone who claims a computer can never compare to that of the human brain, here is your wake-up call. Judging by the results alone, Watson clearly displayed a strong understanding of language and an ability to think. This could mean great things to be had in the future and exciting advancement of our technology.

Thus far, Watson has been seen as a game show spectacle–but what’s next? Does he have something more in store for us or has he performed his last trick? Not to worry. Watson is set to amaze in a much bigger way in the medical field. IBM has already revealed a joint partnership with Nuance Healthcare, announcing that Watson will get the chance to help diagnose and treat patients. If I were a doctor, I’d start brushing up on my books right about now. Click here to learn more about Watson, the IBM supercomputer.

Love Is in the Air!

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Linda came into the office this morning only to discover that some canoodling had been taking place in the office over the weekend!

It appears from the foot tracks left throughout the office that Wireman finally made his move on our perfect employee, Giji. We know Wireman is shy, so he expressed his feelings for Giji in a love letter. We were clever enough to get our hands on the letter to get the scoop on this new office romance.

With words from the heart like these, how could Giji resist the affections of Wireman?

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Make it a special day, one to remember.

Happy Birthday, Rachel!

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Our favorite copywriter, Rachel, celebrated her birthday over the weekend. It was our first office birthday in February and we were pleased to share in her special day! The celebration got underway with our staff lunch party, which included some great American food topped off with an amazing red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.

But the party didn’t stop there! We finished off the celebration with Sprinkles cupcakes and a hilarious conversation about the brewing in-office relationship between Giji and Wireman.

Here's Matilda showing Rachel some birthday love!

Rachel, we hope you had a great meal, good laughs and an even better birthday!

Super Bowl Mania

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Yesterday marked what is arguably America’s most celebrated yearly cultural event: the Super Bowl. Whether for the suspense of the game or creativity of the ads, chances are you probably watched, along with 111 million other viewers glued to their television screens! Regardless of who you were rooting for, one thing we can all agree on is the uniqueness and fun of the commercials.

Some commercials were sure hits while others were just so-so. One of the favorites of the night was this Star Wars-inspired Volkswagen commercial.

What was your favorite commercial?

It’s World Cancer Day and Everyone Needs to Know.

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Did you know… a total of 1,529,560 new cancer cases were expected to be reported in 2010?

Everyone knows someone who has had his or her life altered by the effects of cancer. If it’s not you, it’s your mother, father, brother, sister, wife, husband, child or friend. We all can agree that cancer affects not only the person diagnosed with the disease but also the surrounding support community.

What can we do to help? Cancer fighting organization, Stand Up to Cancer, is asking you to stand up for those you know who have fought the battle by donating your Facebook status. So far 40,055 people around the world have donated their statuses and stood up for those they love. I stood up for my grandfather and others here in the Gunn/Jerkens office have stood up for their friends and family too.

It’s important to keep yourself cancer free, so here are a few cancer-fighting tips to keep you healthy:

  1. Avoid smoking and exposure to smoke
  2. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables
  3. Exercise regularly
  4. Get screened for cancer regularly
  5. Know what you’re being exposed to in the workplace and community
  6. Know your personal and family health history
  7. Limit consumption of red meat and animal fat
  8. Limit your alcohol intake
  9. Practice sun safety and recognize when skin changes occur

Aside from doing your part to keep yourself in good health, there are things you can do to help others who are battling cancer every day. Check out this article by Zachary Sniderman to see some more great and easy ways you can make a difference in someone else’s life.
