From crazy hats and streamers to glitter and tooting horns, counting down to the New Year is a special moment throughout the world that we all celebrate in our own unique way. Are you ready for some new traditions?
Here’s some inspiration from other countries that we all should adopt for this year’s celebration.
Korea
Throughout the night, stories are told by the members of the family to show the history and legacy of the family traditions. Children wish their elders a happy new year with a deep traditional bow at midnight.
Spain and Portugal
When the clock strikes midnight, friends and family eat 12 grapes to bring good luck to each month of the new year. To bring even more luck, people try to eat 12 different varieties of grapes!
Japan
Japanese people love to ring in the New Year with laughter. This is believed to make old worries disappear and ensure that the coming year is a happy one.
Burma
At the Thingyan festival, people splash each other with water in order to start the New Year with a purified soul. This is a fun celebration that lasts all day.
Austria
It’s all about the feast of a suckling pig for the Austrians on New Year’s. Decorating the table with miniature pigs made of marzipan, sugar and chocolate brings good luck to all.
China
The Chinese deep clean their home to rid themselves of last year’s bad luck before the celebration begins.
Australia
Since New Year’s Eve for the Aussies falls in the middle of their summer, most people head to the beach and have a chilled seafood lunch. It’s one big party on the sand.
Cambodia
During the New Year’s Festival, children show respect to their parents or elders by washing their feet. In return, children receive blessings for their futures. It’s important to note that the foot is an important element in Cambodian culture.
Iran
The Iranian New Year marks the first day of spring. Earlier that year, people put seeds in a dish to grow. This symbolizes rebirth and a future of success in the New Year.
