Happy Birthday, Meredith!

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Today we celebrated the very special birthday of one of our account executives – Meredith! In honor of her day, we chowed down on Greek food from G|J’s favorite local restaurant and the feast was rounded off with a scrumptious strawberry shortcake.

Topics of conversation this afternoon included Meredith’s birthday plans, gyro meat, Javier’s restaurant and turtles with personality among other things!

The entire G|J team wants to wish Meredith a very happy birthday! Thank you for everything you do. We appreciate you.

Images of Long Beach

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

If you’re in Long Beach this weekend, make sure that you’re carrying your camera so you can take a picture of this great city that G/J calls home. You might win a cash prize in a photo contest happening this weekend.

Long Beach resident Justin Rudd and the nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT) are sponsoring Say Cheese Long Beach, an event that invites photographers of all experience levels to take pictures of any subject, person or event within the city limits of Long Beach. The photos must be shot between noon on Saturday, 8/28 and noon on Sunday, 8/29. You can find all of the rules and submission details here.

Queen Mary, Belmont Shore, Downtown Long Beach, Gunn/Jerkens’ lobby…no matter where you go this weekend, make sure you snap a pic to help create the Long Beach family album.

Biker Girl

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Linda wanted to start bicycling to get some more exercise but she wanted to make sure she still remembered how to ride one before she bought a bike of her own.

Amanda brought in her beach cruiser from home and we took advantage of some beautiful Long Beach weather and went outside for a brief refresher course. As you can see from this video, Linda had no problems at all. It’s true – you don’t forget how to ride a bicycle!

Happy cycling, Linda!

By the way, if you’re in the Long Beach area, you should support Bike Long Beach, an initiative to make Long Beach the most bike-friendly city in America.

The Great Roof Massacre

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

I was driving to work today, taking my usual shortcut to the Arco Center. As I turned off of Pine to the street behind the building, I was shocked by a horrific sight: the demolition of what I consider a Long Beach landmark, Looff’s roof.

Sad view from my car

Granted, I didn’t care enough about it before to even learn it’s true name or history; I only knew it as “that green roof thing in the parking lot that you can kind of see if you’re strolling down Ocean Blvd in downtown Long Beach.”

If you live or work in downtown Long Beach, you have seen the roof before and have undoubtedly wondered, “Huh?” about this random structure. To write this post, I looked in to the history of the structure to find that it’s the top of an old carousel that dates back to the early 1900’s as part of Nu-Pike Amusement Park. After years of sitting idly in a parking lot, it’s being torn down to build a new condo project.

Everything I Need To Know About Marketing I Learned From The Homeless

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Most of the time when we think about marketing, what we actually think about are the advertisements that inundate just about every aspect of our lives, but it’s far more complex than that. Marketing is, in short, any transfer of information from one person to another. If we listened purely to the rules of the advertising elite, we might be led to believe that the best promotion we can give ourselves is also the most expensive, but that isn’t always true. Some of the most effective advertising actually costs nothing at all.

Growing up, I lived in a few different towns, each with their own little quirks and personalities, but the thing that they each had in common was an abnormally low homeless population. And because the homeless populations in these towns were so low, everybody knew who the homeless people in each town were and where they lived. Furthermore– at least in middle school– it seemed that each of the homeless people living in the community were given a name by the other children in town, and the name was usually the same throughout the community. The thing that interests me is how common I found this to be. Ethical issues aside, it’s fascinating to think that a made up name assigned to a person without their consent could be used unanimously for any reason, let alone without traditional advertising. As somebody working in the marketing field, the whole situation raises a lot of questions: (more…)

Long Beach is on a Roll

Monday, April 19th, 2010

We love our city. Long Beach is a very laid-back and friendly place, with great people and great ideas. Take for instance the Bike Long Beach organization’s new goal of becoming the most bike-friendly city in the nation (watch this video for more information – it’s very cool). Already we have seen changes throughout the city, including green lanes, increased bicycle parking opportunities and a general sense of cyclist welcome.

The organization can use your help and support, so feel free to follow them on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook and check out their website frequently for updates and to watch the progress!

Long Beach Approves Acres of Books “Art Exchange”

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

An artist's rendering of the proposed Acres of Books Art Exchange.

Cool news on the Acres of Books front! Long Beach’s former literary landmark has sat empty and unloved for the nearly two years since it was sold to the city’s redevelopment agency, but major progress is now being made toward kickstarting its new life as a hub of artistic activity. The Press-Telegram reports:

The Long Beach Redevelopment Agency Board approved the final environmental impact report for Art Exchange, an art-driven facility where visitors can watch local artists create, buy art and attend classes.

The 10,150-square-foot building would be at least silver LEED certified and incorporate the front 5,000 square feet of Art Deco facade of Acres of Books, the longtime business that once attracted writer Ray Bradbury and other literati to its cavernous bookstore at 240 Long Beach Blvd., Acres’ home for 50 of its 74 years.

Current plans are for the Art Exchange to be administrated by a nonprofit group, and to feature “artists studios, a hot shop for glass making, ceramics production, demonstrations and classes, gallery spaces” and more.

We’re Singin’ in the Rain

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

The Gunn/Jerkens team has been dealing with some less than ideal weather here in Long Beach. For non-locals that are interested in what “less than ideal” means, here are some pictures of the SoCal situation as of late. Grab your booties and your kayak – today’s commute is going to be a doozey.

These photos are from the great LBPOST.com – they’ve done a nice job of creating a visual record of the flooding.
